In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, Surgery Partners is at the forefront of new service lines and expanding its footprint. As we enter the new year, it’s essential not only to explore new opportunities but also to find balance in our patient care, practice growth, and personal well-being. In this blog, we consider the best ways to navigate this delicate equilibrium.

11 Procedures Added to the ASC-payable List
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have approved 11 additional procedures, including total shoulder arthroplasty, for coverage in ASCs. This decision, outlined in the ASC Payment System Final Rule released on Nov. 2, responds to concerns raised when only 26 dental codes were initially proposed in July. Essentially, CMS is offering beneficiaries a lower-cost choice while saving millions for the Medicare program by shifting volume to high-quality ASC sites of service.

These are the 11 additional approved surgical codes:
• CPT Code 21194: Reconstruction of lower jaw with graft
• CPT Code 21195: Reconstruction of lower jaw without fixation
• CPT Code 23470: Reconstruction of shoulder joint
• CPT Code 23472: Reconstruction of shoulder joint
• CPT Code 27006: Incision of hip tendons
• CPT Code 27702: Reconstruction of ankle joint
• CPT Code 29868: Meniscal transplant knee with scope
• CPT Code 33289: TCAT implantation of wireless pulmonary artery pressure sensor
• CPT Code 37192: Insertion of intravascular vena cava filter
• CPT Code 60260: Repeat thyroid surgery
• CPT Code C9734: Ultrasound ablation/therapeutic intervention, other than uterine leiomyomata

Expanding Horizons: Cardio Procedures
Cardiovascular care has become a major focus, as cardiology procedures saw substantial Medicare payment increases in 2021, making it the fastest-growing ASC specialty. This growth is also in line with Cherise Brown’s foresight that “we will see more orthopedic, spine and cardiac procedures in the ASC setting…CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) recently added several cardiac procedures to the ASC covered procedure list, including diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures, peripheral vascular interventions, and placement of pacemakers and defibrillators.” Embracing these new service lines reflects Surgery Partners’ commitment to staying at the forefront of healthcare innovation.

The Path to Balance
While expansion is crucial, it’s equally important to maintain balance in patient care, practice operations, and personal well-being. Partnering with an ASC, like Surgery Partners, is a key strategy for striking the balance of upholding medical professional standards as a practice grows. A partnership ensures the highest level of patient care and surgical outcomes because it’s predicated on dedicated support that is convenient and cost-effective. The essence of finding equilibrium lies in aligning with those who share a common commitment to optimizing healthcare in this manner.

The Cost-Effective and Convenient Approach
A significant shift in healthcare trends has been the increasing provision of cardiovascular procedures in the outpatient setting and, more specifically, in ASCs. This shift is partly driven by the cost-effectiveness and enhanced comfort and convenience associated with outpatient cardiovascular services when compared to inpatient procedures. Acknowledging this shift not only addresses patient needs but also aligns with the cost-effective and patient-centered approach that defines the future of healthcare.

Balance in Practice Growth and Personal Time
As we engage new service lines and expand our capabilities, we must not lose sight of personal well-being and the delicate balance it requires. Surgery Partners, in its commitment to growth and excellence, must also consider the well-being of its practitioners. Finding this equilibrium involves embracing new service lines while creating boundaries that safeguard personal time and reduce burnout.

The strategic expansion into cardiovascular procedures, alongside an unwavering focus on patient outcomes, exemplifies a commitment to both quality and balance. As we continue to adapt to changing healthcare landscapes, this approach ensures that Surgery Partners remains at the forefront of innovation while nurturing the well-being of its practitioners and staff.
